Why does your vote count? Print E-mail
  •  The European Union is the greatest peace project of all times which unifies 500 millions of people around the values of human rights and human dignity and freedom. The EU has evolved in the course of its history towards a more democratic regime embracing the European citizens by gradual empowerment of the European Parliament. The Lisbon Treaty is going to expand the power of the Parliament even more. You have the chance to support this process and have your say in shaping the history by voting.
  • The right to vote is the fundamental right and duty of every citizen in a democracy and gives you the right to contribute to the shaping of the European policies and the future of Europe.

  • As European tax payers, have your say in determining the direction of the EU spending on regional economic development or environmental and energy projects which shape the environment you live in! The European Parliament has the budgetary power with the European Council and decides on the EU expenditure and revenue.
  • Do not underestimate the Power of the European Parliament! It is one of the main bodies of the EU institutions which participate in the decision-making and its powers are as follows:
    • Approve, amend or reject nearly all EU legislation.
    • Approve the EU budget and new members of the European Commission.
    • Exercise full democratic control over the other EU institutions.
    • Co-legislate with the European Council in many areas. The EU law affects your life in diverse areas from consumer rights to health and food safety and the quality of the air you breathe.
  • The MEPs are there to represent the citizens. They are ready to listen to you and to the civil society in order to keep themselves informed about the troubles and the demands of their electorate. They are under your scrutiny and ready to cooperate with you. Show them your support or disapproval by voting at the next European elections!
  • The greater the number of your votes, the greater scrutiny over the MEPs. Go to the polls as many as possible and make the MEPs feel the power of your scrutiny. Do not forget that the power of the European Parliament stems from your votes. Raise your voice in the EU by using your votes!
  • Greater public support for the European elections will give the European Parliament a greater credibility, which will, in turn, reflect your bid for a stronger Parliament in the EU. Use this chance that comes only once every five years to express your opinion about the way the EU operates!
